As I mentioned a few posts ago, the walking map of the Nakasendo I ordered is missing the first leg of our journey from Kyoto to Kusatsu. So the other day I plotted the route (the squiggly blue line) on MapMyWalk. To the best of my knowledge, this is as close to the actual route of the original Nakasendo as it is possible to walk today.

can't wait to walk by that lake
The lake (Biwa-ko) won't be visible most of the way, but we should get nice views at Otsu, maybe Kusatsu, and a few other places. We're scheduled to spend a night near Hikone at the north-eastern edge of the lake, which I'm told has a neat (original) castle.
I spent many hours riding along the lake shore. There are some wonderful spots. There is a nice walking track near Otsu. Watch out for fishing hooks though, I managed to get caught. Kusatsu is quite inland if you are going near the station. No lake view from there. I think Kusatsu is where I got the Keith Jarrett tickets.
