The final straw?

Just as Mrs Fool and I were starting to come to terms with the natural disasters here and in Mrs Fool's homeland of Japan, another shock. Last night I went down to buy some fish and chips, only to discover that our local shop had put up its prices! No warning at all. Where is "moon man" Ken Ring when you need him?

At least there is some consolation... the Rugby World Cup will be coming to Christchurch in a few months.

Mark's comment made me think of something (painful at the best of times). In New Zealand is Australian Rules Football played? popular?

In the U.S. this sport was introduced on an education (?) station about a decade ago, and I found it fascinating (educational?)

As for the fish 'n' chips price gouging...I'd always look for some conspiracy. The malt vinegar cartel stands to gain hugely from such a move. Hmmm...

I believe Mark's comment was an attenpt at what we call "irony". The truth is the Rugby World Cup games that were to have been played in Christchurch have been moved to Auckland due to earthquake damage to our stadium. (Although - conspiracy theory warning - it's also been noted that the stadium in Auckland is bigger and so the organisers stand to make more money.)

As for Aussie Rules, we don't play it here. In winter we play (in approximate order of popularity) rugby, rugby league (also popular in Australia), soccer (although I think we're supposed to call it football now), and hockey (the field variety not the ice variety). In summer, cricket rules!

And here's another lesson in Kiwi culture. We don't eat our fish and chips with vinegar. Instead, we smother them in tomato sauce (which, here, is not the stuff you put on pizza bases, but is like your ketchup). Confusing, isn't it?

I forgot to mention netball, which is almost exclusively a women's sport. I think it used to be called "outdoor basketball".
